Northern Security has got behind one of the region’s top cycle races as growing interest in the sport has seen the event oversubscribed. The Hadrian’s Wall Stage Race has benefitted from unprecedented local interest in cycling and Northern Security’s business development manager Mike Glaister believes the sport’s popularity has been boosted by the Tour of Britain’s visit to Carlisle.

Northern Security’s sponsorship of the event, which is organised by local club Border City Wheelers, has been led by Glaister – a keen cyclist and fully certified British Cycling Commissaire.

The event’s 60 places were quickly filled by riders from all across the UK eager to tackle the two-day event based at Talkin Tarn near Brampton. The race, which runs over Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 May, will see riders tackle four stages including an individual time trial, road races and a hill climb.

“Northern Security is always keen to give something back to the communities in which it works and we chose cycling because of its growing popularity,” explained Glaister.

“The Hadrian’s Wall Stage Race is an exciting event and offers riders a real mix of challenges over the two days. It’s the only local event that gives less experienced riders the opportunity to compete in a stage race so it was always going to be very popular.”

In addition to ensuring the successful running of the event through financial support, Northern Security is also backing one of the region’s top hopes for overall victory. Penrith cyclist Chris Taylor, a chef at Sharrow Bay Country House, will be chasing victory once the event kicks into action.

“We were really impressed with the support from the people of Carlisle when the Tour of Britain passed through last year and that’s what’s spurred us on to help with this event,” added Northern Security managing director Paul Hopper.

“As well as sponsoring the race we’re also supporting Chris as it would be great for a local rider to take victory on his local event. Hopefully we can help raise the profile of the race and get more young people interested in such a competitive and healthy sport.”

Cyclist Chris added, “The event will be a big challenge and, because of the multiple disciplines, we really need to think about spreading the performance across both the group races and the individual time trial. The popularity of this local event really proves just how much cycling has grown over the last year and it’s great to see new people becoming involved.”

Northern Security has continued to expand after the acquisition of Washington-based Allied Security. The purchase will allow Northern Security to strengthen its services across the north-east by expanding operations north from its Middlesbrough offices in line with its strategy to grow through business acquisitions and organic growth.

The move will see the business offer a greater range of services to Allied’s customers and the ability to increase its respected security services across the north of England as a whole.

“Our overall strategy is to build the company and the regions in which we operate through growth and business acquisitions,” said Northern Security managing director Paul Hopper. “This new purchase will create more business opportunities for us across the north east and allow us to expand our provision of services to the customers which will move across from Allied.

“In the past Allied focused on security officers but now we will be able to offer those customers an extended range of systems services including access control, intruder alarms and CCTV systems.

“This acquisition adds a number of important new customers to our portfolio and the opportunity to expand even further across the north-east. It has also secured jobs in the area with opportunities for further job creation as the business grows.”

North east operations director Paul Heeran added, “Our Middlesbrough offices service a wide range of clients which have business interests further north around Newcastle and Sunderland – identical to the Allied customer portfolio. It is our plan to interlink those customers, including those in Carlisle and Cumbria, to strengthen our position across the north of England.

“The strategic locations of our offices and customer portfolio will give us unrivalled response times and a pool of resources to aid our expansion plans without diluting the high quality service we supply to our existing customers. We understand the importance of quality service delivery and believe this is best served by supplying local support.

“This local service enables us to support our, and our customers’, environmental business plans by keeping travel to a minimum, reducing fuel usage and carbon emissions. This progressive thinking is in line with our ISO 14001 accreditation and is an example of the added value we bring to each security contract.”

Northern Security celebrated a series of exceptional staff achievements at its annual awards ceremony where employees were recognised and rewarded for customer care and performance.

Over 50 staff from across the business’ two main sites attended the event at the Office bar in Carlisle where presentations were made by managing director Paul Hopper.

Bill Morrisson from Penrith collected a Customer Recognition award after being praised by Newton Rigg College for his smart, professional and polite attitude when dealing with holiday-makers using the college facilities during the summer.

The award for Best Newcomer went to Alistair Townsend who started with Northern Security nine months ago after being made redundant from his previous employment of 21 years. Working as a mobile security guard, he picked up the role quickly, adapted well to new challenges and made a positive impact on the company.

Mark Bassett from the Middlesbrough office was the very worthy recipient of the Special Achievement award due to his efforts in dealing with a man who had committed suicide. Mark tried to resuscitate the victim and comforted the man’s girlfriend and a fellow security guard who were both traumatised.

Best Security Team went to the company’s group of officers based at the University of Cumbria’s Fusehill Street campus. Dianne Little, Kim Green, George Scott, Jim Shearer and Bernie Simpson were rewarded for their efforts in working efficiently as a team for the benefit of the customer.

James Turner from the Carlisle office was presented with an award for 10 years service while Mike Thomlinson, David McCrae and John McKeown celebrated five years with the company.

Northern Security prides itself on its motivated and skilled workforce which translates into exceptional levels of customer care and long term partnerships with clients.

Paul Hopper, Northern Security managing director, said: “We understand the important role our workforce has to play and it’s vital that we recognise and reward their efforts and exceptional performances. Many of our staff go above and beyond the remit of their role and that’s what sets us apart from many other security companies. We aim to work in close partnership with customers, to really understand their individual needs, and deliver a high quality service with a focus on customer care. These awards are all part of our efforts to continually develop and reward our workforce.”

Managing director Paul Hopper said the time was right for the security firm, whose headquarters are in St Ninian’s Road, Upperby, to make the change to fit in with its expansion in recent years.

Northern Security operates out of Middlesbrough and Manchester as well as Carlisle, where its growing portfolio of clients now includes the University of Cumbria and the Cumberland Building Society.

The re-brand includes officially dropping the word ‘Limited” after ‘Northern Security’ and adopting a re-designed and streamlined logo as well as a single unified phone number of 0870 777 1633 on all vehicles, signage, stationery, staff clothing and website. It will also see the emphasis shift on to the word ‘Northern’, both for Northern Security and for its sister company Northern Systems, which handles alarms.

Carlisle-born Mr Hopper, who was named Cumbria’s director of the year for 2010 by the Institute of Directors, said: “We have had the old branding for more than 10 years and it is the right time for the company to move forward in this way. There were some difficulties with the old logo, especially with getting the Northern Security Limited design, which featured three separate words inside key-shaped boxes, on to things like uniforms.

“We wanted to keep our familiar red and black colours but we wanted to make it more modern, so we have taken the word ‘Limited’ off and we have also removed the boxes around each individual word and focused more on the word ‘Northern’. This fits in with our sister alarm systems company, Northern Systems, who will also have the emphasis on Northern.

“We looked at different fonts and logos but kept coming back to the big ‘O’ in Northern as the one we really liked. We feel the new look sums up what we are all about as a company: creativity, integrity, excellence and effectiveness. Northern is the brand as we look to the future.”

Northern Security was founded by Mr Hopper in Carlisle in 1998. It now employs more than 100 people in Cumbria, Teesside and Manchester. Among the premises where it provides security are factories, ports, hospitals, universities and housing.

Carlisle-based security expert Northern Security has strengthened its expertise in the sector with the addition of new business development manager Mike Glaister. Mike has over 30 years experience in the security industry and will allow Northern Security to expand and offer an enhanced quality of customer support.

Mike’s unrivalled experience, and wide respect across the industry, will help Northern Security grow its customer base around services such as intruder alarms, CCTV and access control. The company is so confident that Mike’s appointment will boost sales that it’s already started to recruit for new security engineers.

But one of the main benefits of the new position will be the company’s increased ability to offer local customer care and support. Northern Security prides itself on the individual and bespoke security solutions it offers to local customers and has previously won several security industry prizes for its training, customer service and standards.

In addition to security systems, Northern Security also provides security officers, mobile patrols and guarding to a diverse range of businesses across Cumbria and the north of England.

Paul Hopper, Northern Security managing director, said: “Mike is a superb addition to the Northern Security team and his vast experience, specific expertise and industry knowledge will help us both expand and build our important relationships with customers. Our focus has always been to have a strong team of people within the business who can develop our services and add value to customers, and Mike certainly fits that bill.”

Mike Glaister, Northern Security business development manager, said: “I’ve been in the security industry for a long time but am genuinely excited about this new role. Throughout those years I’ve built up a wealth of business contacts and understand exactly what companies are after in terms of security, so that expertise will certainly help Northern Security expand and support customers even further.”

A Carlisle firm has been ranked as one of the UK’s top security companies in a nation-wide review of elite providers. Northern Security was listed in the top five per cent of private security contractors in the UK after an annual industry-wide assessment of standards and services.

Northern Security provides security guards, intruder alarms and CCTV systems to many businesses and organisations across Cumbria and its award-winning services and high standards are well known.

But now the company, headed by managing director Paul Hopper, has been recognised by the industry’s regulatory body, the Security Industry Authority. Its Approved Contractor Scheme was launched to raise standards across the sector and every year it undertakes an inspection and audit to ensure security service providers meet the required criteria.

Over 700 security businesses are assessed against key industry performance and service indicators, and a top position allows providers to distinguish themselves as one of the best in the UK.

For the second year in a row, Northern Security has claimed a spot in the top five per cent, helping to demonstrate the exacting standards and high levels of customer service it delivers. In a bid to further enhance its services to local companies, Northern Security recently appointed Mike Glaister, with over 30 years experience in the industry, to the new position of business development manager.

Paul Hopper, Northern Security managing director, said: “At Northern Security we pride ourselves in the high standards of service and customer support, and that attention to detail and added value helps to set us apart from other security providers. This performance has been recognised by our regulators and it’s rewarding that we’ve again been listed as one of the top companies. This success is a credit to all our employees who ensure our customers receive the best possible service.”
